Ureteral stent removal is a medical procedure during which a ureteral stent—a thin, flexible tube inserted into the ureter to ensure urine flow from the kidney to the bladder—is removed. This procedure is performed once the stent has fulfilled its purpose.

What is a ureteral stent?

A ureteral stent is a medical device placed in the ureter to restore or maintain urine flow from the kidney to the bladder. It is most commonly used when the ureter is blocked due to stones, tumors, inflammation, or after surgical procedures. The stent helps prevent urine retention in the kidney, which can cause pain, infections, and kidney damage.

Why is ureteral stent removal necessary?

Ureteral stent removal is needed when:

The stent’s purpose has been completed: the stent is placed temporarily until the underlying issue is resolved (e.g., stones are removed or inflammation subsides).
The stent causes discomfort: some patients may experience pain, frequent urination, or blood in the urine due to the stent.
The stent becomes blocked or infected: when it no longer functions properly or causes complications.

Procedure in the clinic

Ureteral stent removal is performed in a urology office.

Consultation: the urologist evaluates the patient’s condition, how long the stent has been in place, and the reason for removal.
Preparation: the patient lies on an examination table, and the procedure area is disinfected.
Anesthesia: local anesthesia may be used.
Stent removal: the doctor uses special instruments (e.g., a cystoscope) to gently remove the stent through the urethra.
After the procedure: the patient is observed for a short time and given recommendations for post-procedure care and possible side effects.

The procedure is quick and is usually well tolerated.
