Dental filling is necessary when a cavity (“hole”) forms in a tooth due to caries (tooth decay). Caries is one of the most common diseases worldwide. There are several causes of tooth decay, but one of the main reasons is poor oral hygiene. When teeth are not properly cared for, plaque accumulates between teeth, in grooves, and along the gum line. Dental plaque contains numerous microorganisms and bacteria that break down food residues and gradually dissolve the hard tissues of the tooth.
A dentist removes the decayed tissue and fills the cavity with a filling material, restoring the functional shape of the tooth and its aesthetic appearance. If caries is not treated in time, the cavity enlarges and causes pain. Untreated tooth decay may develop into pulpitis and/or periodontitis, which can destroy deeper tooth tissues, cause abscesses or inflammation, and may eventually lead to tooth extraction.
How Is Tooth Decay Treated?
Before treatment, diagnostics are performed, and if necessary, local anesthesia is applied. After removing the damaged tissues, the cavity is prepared for filling. During the filling procedure, the material is applied in layers to mimic the natural structure of the tooth. First, a softer material similar to dentin is placed, followed by a hard enamel-like layer on top.
This method restores the natural tooth structure – the softer inner layer ensures comfort while chewing, and the harder outer layer provides durability and resistance to wear. Nowadays, the color of the filling is individually matched to each patient, so the restored tooth looks natural to the naked eye.
If the damage caused by caries is extensive, treatment may require more than one visit (for example, placing a lining or preparing the tooth for root canal treatment). In such cases, a temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth from external irritants (food, drinks, etc.) until the next visit. After completing treatment, the temporary filling is replaced with a permanent one.
Aesthetic Fillings for Front and Back Teeth
Aesthetic (cosmetic) filling is a restorative method that preserves as much natural tooth structure as possible while restoring the anatomical shape, natural color, translucency, and shine of a healthy tooth.
Aesthetic fillings are performed when:
- Restoring worn or eroded tooth surfaces
- Closing gaps between teeth
- Correcting uneven teeth
- Changing tooth shape or color
- Repairing chipped or decayed teeth
Dental fillings are made using high-quality materials, carefully matched to the natural shade and translucency of the patient's healthy teeth.
How to Care for Teeth After a Filling?
Filled teeth require the same care as natural teeth. Proper oral hygiene should be maintained at all times. It is recommended to have professional oral hygiene (cleaning) once or twice a year, depending on individual needs. During this procedure, fillings are polished, which helps extend their lifespan.
