Culture from urine

Urine culture is performed to identify the pathogen causing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Normally, bacteria are not present in the urinary tract organs, and urine is sterile; therefore, when bacteria enter, they can cause inflammation and infection.

Urinary tract infections may be acute, chronic asymptomatic, complicated, or uncomplicated. The infection may be associated with abnormalities of the urinary tract, kidney stones, or other factors that create favorable conditions for microorganisms to enter and cause inflammation.

Important information:

• Microorganisms present in the external genital area may contaminate the urine sample and affect the test results, so proper sample collection is essential.
• Before collecting the sample, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly and clean the genital area several times with soap.
• The urine sample must be collected in a sterile, specially designed container; otherwise, the test results may be inaccurate.
• The initial portion of urine should not be used. First void about 30 ml, and then collect the midstream urine sample.
