Pigmented Lesion Removal
Pigmented lesions develop due to an excess of melanin, the pigment naturally present in the skin. Their appearance may be influenced by hormonal imbalances, long-term use of certain medications, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. It is also observed that the number of pigmented lesions tends to increase with age. When they appear on visible areas of the body, pigmented lesions may be aesthetically unappealing and cause discomfort. The most effective method for removing pigmented lesions is laser treatment.
Proper preparation for the procedure is important. Exposure to direct sunlight and tanning beds should be avoided for up to 4 weeks before the procedure and for approximately 6 weeks afterward. For this reason, laser removal of pigmented lesions is most commonly recommended during the colder seasons of the year.
During the Procedure
The procedure is generally painless, however, local anesthesia may be used if necessary. Before the treatment, the physician selects the most appropriate laser settings based on the type, size, location, and other characteristics of the pigmented lesion. After the procedure, a special cream is usually applied to soothe the treated skin. More than one treatment session may be required to achieve complete lightening or removal of pigmented lesions.
After the Procedure
Immediately after the procedure, the treated pigmented lesions become darker, which is a normal skin reaction. Within 3 to 7 days, the skin in the treated area begins to flake and peel until it gradually blends with the natural skin tone. For up to 6 weeks after the procedure, avoid direct sun exposure, do not use tanning beds, and apply sunscreen regularly.
