Correction of vertical folds of the lips by botulinum injection
Botulinum Toxin Injections for Wrinkle Reduction
Botulinum toxin injections are one of the most commonly performed wrinkle-reduction procedures. The first expression lines can appear as early as young adulthood due to repeated facial movements such as smiling, frowning, or expressing emotions like anger and sadness. As the skin ages, these wrinkles become more pronounced and deeper, altering the overall appearance of the face. Wrinkles also develop over time as a result of changes in facial tissues, including reduced skin elasticity and tissue sagging. The effects of botulinum toxin injections are achieved by reducing or temporarily blocking the activity of specific muscles. These injections can be used to reduce wrinkles in the forehead area, around the eyes, and less commonly around the chin and lips. Botulinum toxin may also be used to treat bruxism and to correct a gummy smile.
Who is this procedure suitable for?
Botulinum toxin injections are suitable for anyone who wishes to reduce or eliminate facial expression lines. The injections are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for individuals who have an allergy to botulinum toxin or any of its components.
During the Procedure
Before the procedure, the treatment area is numbed using ice or a topical anesthetic. Botulinum toxin is injected using special syringes with ultra-fine needles. The required amount of product is determined individually for each patient. Within a few days after the injections, the treated muscles relax and the wrinkles caused by their activity become smoother. The results typically last between six and nine months.
After the Procedure:
- Patients may return to their normal daily activities immediately after the procedure;
- Do not massage the injection sites for 12 hours after the procedure;
- Do not lie down in a horizontal position for 4–6 hours after the procedure;
- Avoid intense physical activity, alcohol consumption, and excessive sun exposure during the first few days after the procedure;
- Avoid overheating, including hot baths and saunas, for 7–10 days after the injections.
