When is tooth extraction performed?
Tooth extraction is most often performed when a tooth is so severely damaged that it can no longer be restored or properly treated with fillings or prosthetics. It may also be carried out as part of orthodontic treatment or in cases of periodontal disease. Tooth extraction can also be necessary to prevent complications caused by impacted or partially erupted teeth, or problems arising from improperly erupted wisdom teeth.
At the “Meliva” dental clinic, damaged teeth are professionally and painlessly extracted, including surgical removal as well as removal of impacted and wisdom teeth.
When is wisdom tooth extraction necessary?
According to specialists, wisdom teeth do not need to be removed if they are fully erupted, healthy, in proper contact with the opposing wisdom tooth, function normally in chewing, and can be properly cleaned.
Wisdom teeth should be removed when they are irreparably damaged, erupt improperly, accumulate plaque, or cause inflammation of surrounding tissues, abscesses, or cysts. Removal is also recommended if they damage adjacent teeth, cause tumor-like processes, or for orthodontic reasons.
Treatment process
Before a tooth extraction procedure, a consultation with an oral surgeon is required. During this consultation, necessary examinations are carried out, the condition of the patient’s teeth is evaluated, and the position of wisdom or other impacted teeth is assessed. A decision is made whether extraction is needed, how many teeth need to be removed, and which technique will be used. The procedure may be a simple or a complex surgical extraction.
For simple tooth extraction, no special preparation is required, but it is recommended to eat and drink beforehand, as eating and drinking are not allowed for 2–3 hours after the procedure.
Simple extraction is performed under local anesthesia, making the procedure painless and comfortable. Once the anesthesia wears off, mild discomfort may occur, and pain-relief medication can be prescribed if needed.
Complex extraction of damaged, wisdom, or impacted teeth can be performed under sedation upon the patient’s request to avoid discomfort. When preparing for extraction with sedation, you should not eat for 6 hours and should avoid drinking liquids for 3 hours before the procedure. After sedation, the patient may feel slightly drowsy for one or several hours, so it is important to have someone accompany them. It is also important to note that sedation can only be performed when the patient is fully healthy—if you have a cold, cough, runny nose, or fever, the procedure must be postponed.
What to do after a tooth extraction?
Bleeding. It is normal to experience bleeding after extraction. Bite on a gauze pad for 30 minutes after the procedure. If bleeding continues, replace it with a new one and bite firmly for another 20 minutes. Repeat if necessary. If bleeding does not stop, contact your doctor.
Smoking and alcohol. Do not smoke for at least 4–5 hours after extraction, as smoking slows healing. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
Rinsing. Do not rinse your mouth on the first day. You may drink non-hot beverages, but avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully, as this may dislodge the blood clot. The following day, rinse with antiseptic solutions recommended by your doctor.
Swelling. To reduce swelling, apply a wrapped ice pack to the cheek in the extraction area. Apply cold for up to 30 minutes with 15-minute breaks for 1–2 hours.
Pain. For moderate pain, take any pain reliever that does not thin the blood. If the procedure was more extensive, take the medication prescribed by your dentist.
Food. For the first 24 hours, eat soft, mild, and non-hot food. Chew on the healthy side.
Sutures. If non-dissolving sutures were used, they will need to be removed after one week. If dissolvable sutures were used, they will disappear on their own.
Medication. Take all prescribed medications according to instructions.
Hygiene. Proper oral hygiene promotes healing. In the first few days, be careful not to disturb the surgical site or sutures. Brush teeth gently and rinse more frequently as advised.
Irreparably damaged, partially erupted, or improperly erupted wisdom teeth can lead to complications and pose a risk to oral health. Register for a consultation with experienced oral surgeons at the “Meliva” dental clinic. Professional specialists will ensure that tooth extraction, surgical removal, and removal of wisdom or impacted teeth are carried out quickly, professionally, and painlessly.
