Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is performed when the inner tissue of the tooth—the pulp—has been affected by inflammation.
The pulp consists of soft connective tissue containing cells, fibers, blood vessels, and nerves. Through the circulatory and lymphatic systems, the pulp is closely connected with the surrounding tissues and the entire body.
Symptoms of Root Canal Inflammation
-
Severe pain
One of the main symptoms is intense pain. It may be throbbing, sharp, and localized around the affected tooth. The pain often worsens when eating or drinking, especially hot, cold, or sweet substances. It may also radiate to the jaw, ear, or other parts of the head. -
Increased sensitivity to temperature
The tooth may become highly sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks. Even water or cool air may cause discomfort. -
Sensitivity to pressure
Pain may occur when biting or chewing, even with slight pressure. -
Swelling
Swelling can develop around the affected tooth or gums, often accompanied by redness and discomfort. -
Bad breath
Infection may cause unpleasant odor or even pus discharge near the affected tooth. -
Gum sensitivity and redness
The gums around the tooth may become red, swollen, sensitive, and may bleed. -
Difficulty chewing
Chewing may become uncomfortable due to pain and sensitivity.
If you notice these symptoms, it is important to consult an endodontist. Untreated infection can lead to complications such as abscesses or tooth loss.
When Is Endodontic Treatment Needed?
Pulp damage occurs when it is exposed to long-term irritation from:
- tooth decay (caries)
- mechanical trauma (e.g., repeated fillings)
- chronic trauma (high fillings or prosthetics)
- acute trauma (tooth injury)
When bacteria reach the pulp, inflammation (pulpitis) develops. Root canal treatment is necessary to prevent the spread of infection.
What Happens If Root Canal Treatment Is Not Performed?
If treatment is delayed:
- pulp tissue dies
- infection spreads to surrounding tissues
- bone destruction may occur
This condition is known as apical periodontitis.
How Are Root Canals Treated?
Primary conservative root canal treatment involves:
- removing damaged or infected pulp
- preserving healthy surrounding tissues
- eliminating infection
What to Do If a Tooth Hurts After Root Canal Treatment?
- Take pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen or paracetamol) as recommended
- Apply a cold compress for swelling (15–20 minutes with breaks)
- Avoid chewing hard foods on the affected side
- Maintain good oral hygiene (brush gently and floss carefully)
When to See a Dentist?
- If pain does not improve within a few days
- If swelling worsens or fever develops
- If chewing pain persists after a week
These may indicate complications.
How Is the Tooth Nerve Removed?
Root canal treatment (removal of infected or dead nerve tissue) is performed under local anesthesia, with the tooth isolated using a rubber dam.
- Pulp tissue is removed using hand and rotary instruments
- The canal is disinfected with antimicrobial solutions
Root Canal Treatment with a Microscope
Cleaning and filling of the root canal system can be performed using a dental microscope. This allows:
- better visualization
- greater precision
- improved treatment outcomes
Root Canal Retreatment
Retreatment is performed when previous treatment has failed. It involves:
- removing old filling material
- cleaning and disinfecting canals
- refilling with antibacterial material
After 7–10 days, the canal is permanently sealed.
Modern endodontic treatment is carried out using advanced techniques and microscopes, ensuring reliable results.
Dentists emphasize that teeth treated endodontically should be regularly monitored and checked during follow-up visits.
Why Preserve a Natural Tooth?
Whenever possible, VIC clinic specialists prioritize saving the natural tooth, because it ensures:
- effective chewing
- normal bite force and sensation
- protection of neighboring teeth from excessive wear and deformation
