Dental Implants
Procedure Steps:
-
Sedation
If the patient chooses to undergo the procedure with sedation, an anesthesiologist administers intravenous sedation before treatment and monitors the patient throughout the entire procedure. -
Local anesthesia
Local anesthesia is administered before implantation, so the patient feels no pain. -
Implant placement
Implantation is performed, and if necessary, bone augmentation is carried out. -
Suture removal
Sutures are usually removed after 7–14 days. Healing is evaluated, and an additional dental X-ray is performed to assess the implant in the bone. The healing period continues.
The implant integration period ranges from 3 to 9 months, depending on the procedure complexity and the need for augmentation.
Prosthetics on Implants
The final stage of treatment is prosthetics. The dentist takes impressions or performs digital scanning of the implants, and prosthetic teeth are manufactured. Several visits may be required to ensure precise fitting.
More information can be found in the section “Implant Prosthetics.”
When Are Dental Implants Needed?
Missing One Tooth
This is the simplest case: an implant is inserted into the missing tooth site, and a crown is attached. Compared to a traditional bridge, implants preserve adjacent healthy teeth because they do not require grinding.
Missing Several Teeth
If multiple teeth in a row are missing, they can be restored using two implants supporting a bridge. For example, a three-unit bridge can be placed on two implants.
Missing All Teeth
In cases of a fully or potentially edentulous jaw, the dental arch is restored using 4–8 implants, onto which a fixed prosthesis is attached. The exact number of implants is determined during consultation.
What to Expect After Dental Implantation
It is normal to experience:
- Mild pain
- Swelling
- Slight fever
- Minor bleeding immediately after the procedure
These symptoms are temporary and usually subside within a few days. Patients should monitor their condition closely for at least three days.
Each patient’s recovery is individual, so consult your oral surgeon if symptoms are concerning.
Swelling typically peaks on the second or third day, especially after complex procedures such as sinus lifting or bone grafting. In rare cases, bruising may appear.
To reduce swelling:
- Apply a cold compress wrapped in a towel
- Use for 20 minutes with breaks of several hours
Pain and fever usually disappear within a few days. Prescribed medications (pain relievers, antibiotics, and non-blood-thinning agents) must be taken exactly as directed.
Post-Implant Care
During the first days:
- Brush teeth gently and only after 24 hours
- Avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks (it significantly increases implant failure risk)
- Do not rinse your mouth or consume hot food/drinks during the first day
- Avoid physical exertion
Advantages of “All-on-4” Implant Treatment
- Only 4 implants are needed → faster results and fewer surgeries
- Shorter healing time compared to other methods
- Implant success rate reaches 99.7% in VIC clinics
- Stable, natural-looking fixed prosthesis
- Improved chewing and speaking comfort
- No risk of removable dentures slipping or falling out
- Often avoids bone grafting, as implants can be placed at a 45° angle
- Long-lasting and reliable results using advanced technologies
- Can be performed under sedation for greater comfort
This procedure significantly improves quality of life for patients with missing teeth, allowing them to enjoy food again and regain confidence in their smile.
When Is “All-on-4” Treatment Recommended?
According to dentists, the most common reasons include:
- Periodontal disease and severe tooth mobility
- Advanced decay with heavily damaged teeth
- Poor oral hygiene and lack of timely treatment
How Is Implantation Performed?
Detailed Examination
Comprehensive diagnostics including 3D CT scans and X-rays are used to assess bone quality and quantity.
Initial Consultation and Treatment Plan
A personalized treatment plan is created and discussed with the patient, including all questions and future visits.
Implant Procedure
- Preparation is performed on the day of surgery
- 4 implants are inserted into the jawbone
- Non-restorable teeth may be removed
- Procedure duration: 2–3 hours
Sedation (If Required)
Sedation reduces anxiety and fear while keeping the patient conscious. It is discussed during consultation.
Healing and Temporary Prosthetics
Healing takes 3–4 months while implants integrate into the bone. Temporary prosthetics may be used during this period.
Final Prosthetics
After healing, temporary prosthetics are replaced with permanent ones that fully restore natural function and aesthetics.
Sedation
Sedation (conscious sedation) is a medically induced suppression of consciousness that results in a drowsy state or light sleep, from which the patient can be easily awakened. Sedation helps reduce stress, promotes relaxation, and eliminates fear. The patient does not worry about what is happening around them and may partially or completely not remember the procedure.
A calm and relaxed patient also provides optimal conditions for the surgeon to concentrate and perform the procedure.
Immediately after the procedure, the patient is awake and conscious, but may still experience:
- drowsiness,
- slight coordination difficulties,
- difficulty concentrating,
- partial memory gaps related to the procedure.
Driving is strictly prohibited after sedation, and a companion is required. It is also recommended not to plan important meetings, exams, or other responsible activities on the same day.
Sedation is Suitable for Patients Who:
- Experience uncontrollable fear
- Are scheduled for complex and long-lasting dental procedures
- Have a strong gag reflex
IMPORTANT
If you have serious health conditions, allergies, or regularly take medication, inform your doctor during the consultation.
Dental Treatment with Sedation
Dental treatment with sedation is becoming increasingly popular, as many people want to reduce stress and discomfort associated with dental procedures. Sedation can be used for adults, children, and elderly patients, for procedures such as:
- dental fillings
- prosthetics
- implants
- root canal treatment
- and others
Patients who undergo dental treatment with sedation often report a much more comfortable and manageable experience.
Tooth Extraction with Sedation
Tooth extraction with sedation is particularly relevant for patients requiring surgical procedures, especially in complicated cases such as impacted or partially erupted teeth (e.g., wisdom teeth). It ensures that the patient does not feel pain or fear during the procedure and allows for a smoother and more efficient treatment process.
What Should You Know Before Sedation?
- Do not eat for 6 hours and do not drink for 4 hours before the procedure
- Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up (for medication administration)
Sedation is performed and continuously monitored by an anesthesiologist–resuscitator. VIC dental clinics are licensed and equipped with modern technology to ensure safe and effective sedation procedures.
