Punctal and Canalicular Dilation Surgery

Tears are essential for moisturizing the eye and protecting its surface from microbes. Excess tears drain through structures located in the orbit—namely the tear puncta and canaliculi, which open into a duct connecting the eye to the nasal cavity. This is why the nose becomes congested during crying.

Due to congenital conditions, recurrent inflammation of the tear ducts (dacryocystitis), or external factors (e.g., dust), these channels may become narrowed or even completely blocked. When the normal drainage pathway is disrupted, tears overflow onto the cheek.

Purpose of the procedure

The aim of the surgery is to restore the patency (openness) of the tear puncta and canaliculi.

Procedure

The affected structures can be dilated using a probe (a rigid instrument), which is passed through the tear puncta to widen the openings and ducts. In some cases, depending on the clinical situation, it may be necessary to keep the canaliculi permanently open by inserting a stent.

Anesthesia and setting

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

After the procedure

The patient may return home immediately after the procedure.
