Removal of foreign body from the eye

Small foreign bodies in the eye, such as particles of sand, metal shavings, or eyelashes, can cause discomfort, tearing, pain, and sensitivity to light. If the foreign body becomes lodged in deeper eye tissues, inflammation or other complications may develop.

• An eye examination is performed to assess the type, location, and depth of the foreign body.
• The eye is numbed using special drops.
• The foreign body is removed using appropriate medical instruments.
• If the injury is deep, an additional procedure in an operating room may be required.
• After removal, appropriate care is provided for the eye.

After removal of the foreign body, a minor wound may remain on the cornea or conjunctiva, which typically heals within a few days with the use of prescribed treatment.
