Head and Neck Vascular Ultrasound

Head and neck vascular ultrasound, also known as a Doppler ultrasound examination, is a modern, non-invasive, and highly accurate diagnostic method used to assess the condition of blood vessels, as well as blood flow speed and direction in the head and neck area.

This examination is essential for the early diagnosis and prevention of diseases that may lead to stroke or other neurological disorders. When is head and neck vascular ultrasound needed?

This examination is important if you experience symptoms or have risk factors related to circulatory disorders:

• Numbness or weakness in the arms or legs
• Temporary speech or memory disturbances

What does head and neck vascular ultrasound show?

This examination allows detailed evaluation of:

• Condition of vessel walls: detection of atherosclerotic plaques, their size, structure, and stability
• Narrowing of blood vessels (stenosis): determination of the degree of narrowing and its impact on blood flow
• Blood clots (thrombi): detection of clots that may lead to stroke
• Vascular abnormalities: congenital or acquired changes such as aneurysms (vessel dilation) or malformations
• Blood flow speed and direction: assessment of whether blood is properly reaching the brain
  
  

How is the examination performed?

The procedure is completely painless and takes about 15–30 minutes. The patient lies comfortably on their back while the radiologist applies a special gel to the neck and scalp to improve the transmission of ultrasound waves.

A probe is then moved over the examined areas. The probe emits high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off the blood vessels and blood flow. These reflected waves are converted into real-time images on a computer screen.

Preparation for the examination

Usually, no special preparation is required for head and neck vascular ultrasound. You can eat and drink as usual. It is important to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners.

On the day of the examination, it is recommended to avoid wearing neck jewelry.
